MATCH REPORT: It was hard work for City of Peterborough at Cambridge University

City of Peterborough had to work hard for their expected win at Cambridge University in the Tier One event of the English Hockey competitions yesterday (December 3).

City beat the students 5-2 on the opening day of the East Premier A Division, but they had to come from behind to seal a place in the third round.

City looked a little rusty off the back of a cancelled fixture last Saturday followed by a cancelled midweek training session, both falling foul of frost.

The University were the better side in the first half, taking an early lead through a deceptively struck open play shot which deceived City ‘keeper Cameron Goodey.

City gradually got into their stride, and Ben Read put them back on equal terms, before the students scored a further goal from the second phase of a short corner for a deserved 2-1 half time lead.

City were a different side in the second half, getting an early equaliser through a second Read goal following a short corner break down, and then taking the lead for the first time from another short corner conversion from Joe Finding.

City then saw out the game professionally despite a string of late University short corners, well defended including forcing a couple of fine saves from Goodey.

City will now hope for a home tie as they once again progress to the last 16 of this top tier cup competition, the a successor to the HA Cup.

City play the University again, at home in an East Premier A Division match next Saturday (December 9).
