Athletic are bidding for an instant return to the Midlands Premiership after getting relegated last season. They have only lost once this term and their fine record never really came under threat against Borough.

“We did go 5-0 up very early on but in all honesty Bedford were always going to win this one,” said Borough vice-chairman Archie Bennett.

“They were National League last season when we were in Midlands Division Two and they are a terrific side at this level.

“Yet they only beat us by four tries to three so that shows how well we’re coming along. We upped our game and had our moments and it’s fair to say all the boys did well.

“Of course we were disappointed to lose but we’re not beating ourselves up about it. We’re not overly upset. It was a good performance and we have to make sure we play as well as that next week at home to Bugbrooke.”

Centre Michael Bean (2) and number eight Sarel Pretorius crossed for Borough’s tries, two of which were converted by Joe Andresen.
