Long-serving Truss bows out

One of the club’s longest-serving oarsmen, Dave Truss, rowed for the club for the last time after first competing in Peterborough City colours almost 50 years ago when a pupil at Lincoln Road Boys School.

Last month Truss retired from his job at Hotpoint/Indesit/Whirlpool after working for the company for 38 years.

And his retirement is taking him away from the area and away from his beloved Peterborough City. But he won’t be hanging up his oars.

“After 49 years and nine months I am changing rowing clubs. I’m not sure which one I’m joining. That depends on whether or not they have younger guys to pull me along.

“It’ll be sad to leave. I’ve had a great time here and made many great friends,” said Truss.

Certainly based on pots won, it’s been a great time.

“I’ve been quite lucky over the years, claiming nearly 400 wins in various boat combinations,” Truss added.

“I won at national level in eights, fours and pairs and also raced at the world veteran championships a few times where second place was the best I could do.

“It was a shame I couldn’t win on my farewell appearance at the weekend, but we did well to come second with two ‘scratch’ crews the guys put together on the day.

“I think my most memorable race was at Ross-on-Wye where there were 33 entries and we raced on a knockout basis from 8.15am until about 8pm. And would you believe we dead-heated in the final and had to race again.

“I only remember it well because we won in the dark!”
