Longthorpe Tennis Club’s club championship finals weekend turned into a personal duel between club captain JP Lamy and Phil Watson.
The pair qualified for all five finals they were eligible to enter and it was Watson who triumped 4-1 after several close battles.
Lamy claimed his sole win in the men’s open doubles, partnering Ed Sharman to victory over Watson and Tim Palmer after three tight sets. Lamy and Sharman triumphed 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
The mixed open doubles also went to three sets with Watson and Caroline Beaty beating Lamy and Alison Hurford 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Lamy and Hurford also went down in the over 45 mixed doubles, 7-6, 7-5 to Watson and Caroline Worth.
The over 45 mens doubles final was another to travel the full distance with Watson and Roy Purves triumphing 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 over Lamy and Martin Trayford with the last set played under champions tiebreak rules.
Watson and Lamy finished the weekend with an excellent singles final which the latter won 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
The players decided to play a champions tie break instead of a third full set to beat fading light and fatigue!
