Josh sets terrific pace to win pairs match on the Glen

But such is the weather at the moment that by the time matchday came around on Sunday temperatures rose to a balmy 14 degrees.

Top rod was the in-form Josh Pace. The Sensas Mark One rod rounded off a cracking weekend of action - he also won the Rookery Waters Open on Saturday - by taking the top spot from the River Glen with a net of roach taken on bread punch weighing in at 17lb 4oz.

Emneth angler Mick Asker came second with 13lb 12oz with Alistair Ogilvie third on 12lb 12oz.

On the River Welland anglers were worried the resident otters and also sightings of a seal would make life extremely difficult and it was tough going for some.

But there were some huge weights taken. Topping the list with a fine net of roach was Dave Thornton with 30lb 9oz.

Joe Roberts came a close second on 27lb 9oz followed by rising star Josh Newman with 25lb 9oz.

Winning pair on the day were Peterborough rods Thornton and Dale Stones with a combined weight of 41lb 10oz.

OLD NENE

Huntingdon tackle dealer Stan Binge has been running a small winter series for several years now, but the attendance this year has been way above normal.

That’s because he has allowed anglers from far and wide to attend because the venues he has been using will almost certainly be used in the forthcoming Angling Trust Winter League.

Round three moved onto the Old Nene at Benwick where tench weights made up the bulk of the top three catches from the early numbers at the village end.

Unfortunately none of the many locals fishing made much of an impression as the top places were filled by anglers practicing.

In fact the Drennan Oxford squad made a clean sweep of the top three places.

Leading the way with seven tench taken on chopped worm and caster was Tony Hobbs with 23lb 5oz.

Runner-up and team-mate at the very next peg was Gary Barkley with four tench for 14lb 3oz .

In third place with two small tench and a net of roach was Ian Young on 12lb 3oz followed by Justin Mabere with 10lb 14oz.

BEASTIE LAKE

The winter series on the Beastie Lake at the Decoy complex run by March rod Barry Mason has been popular for a couple of years now and once again it proved to be a very exciting, well run event which came to an end on Sunday.

City rod John Whincup, now backed by Frenzee fishing tackle manufacturers, took the title with a fine eight-point score over the four matches.

Runner-up was Chris Barley on nine and third was Kevin Wadge on 10 points.

On a difficult day for some Adam Wayman topped the field with 69lb 14oz from peg 13, catching well on the long pole with pellet.

Charlie Lawrence was second from 24 fishing a maggot feeder to finish on 68lb 6oz, then it was John Smalley with 64lb 14oz.
