Peterborough Phantoms are confident they can cope with a stronger National League next season, but they still don’t know when they will be starting

Peterborough Phantoms defenceman Callum Buglass believes the National Ice Hockey League will be even stronger next season.

But he’s confident the city side will cope with whatever challenges are thrown their way.

The Welshman won the club’s most improved player of the year prize last season and was rewarded with a two year contract.

Phantoms were third in the table and had just lost a cup final to league champions Telford when the coronavirus crisis caused an early finish to the season.

“As every year, the league is getting stronger,” Buglass told the Phantoms’ website.

“Last season went well for me. I contributed a few more points & scored a few goals which is always extremely fun and hopefully I can continue to build on that next season.

“As a team it was tough and we had a lot of key injuries all at once, but then we started to build up a lot of momentum when we started getting guys back and we all felt very confident about our chances going into play-offs.

“It was a shame the way the season was brought to a halt but at the same time everyone’s safety comes first.

“But I’m very happy to be back in Peterborough for the next two seasons.

“I really enjoy any time we’re on the ice as a team and, since I’ve been here, and from what the boys have told me, there’s always been a good locker room in Peterborough.

“It’s genuinely fun to go to battle with the boys in games and we are confident we will have another good season.”

When that season will actually start is anyone’s guess even though there was some encouraging news from the UK Government last week as they gave ice rinks permission to open from August 1.

A follow-up statement from the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) is believed to be imminent.

A Phantoms spokesman told the PT this week: “There is still no news (about the league start date) at the moment.

“We’re hoping we’ll at least have something to work towards by the end of July, but there’s no guarantee of that.

“It’s just a case of having to wait and see at present.”

Phantoms will face the same nine opponents in the National League next season and the club are currently selling season tickets.
