First win at the second attempt for Peterborough Phantoms

A first win of the new NIHL Division One South season has been gained at the second attempt by Peterborough Phantoms.

The city team triumphed 3-1 at local rivals Milton Keynes Thunder last night (September 23) to quickly make amends for their overtime disappointment at the hands of London Raiders the previous evening.

Less than three minutes had passed when Will Weldon fired Phantoms into a lead which was doubled by captain James Ferrara early in the second period.

Thunder halved their arrears through one-time Phantoms man Jamie Line, but the two-goal cushion was restored when youngster Taylor Romeo struck for the first time at senior level.

Some fine work from netminder Jordan Marr preserved the advantage during the final period when Phantoms lost import Ales Padelek on a 2+10 penalty for checking to the head.

“We really wanted to pick up the two points after not managing to do that on Saturday night at home,” said Phantoms head coach Slava Koulikov.

“Milton Keynes might not have the biggest budget or the flashiest players, but they skated hard with a lot of speed and energy after not playing the previous night.

“They have added some forwards to their roster from last season and they provided a tough challenge for us, but we got the goals we needed and avoided too many penalties.

“It was great to see Taylor get his first goal. It was a big one for him personally and also came at an important time for the team to give us the two-goal cushion to take into the third period.

“We can’t control the things we feel went against us on Saturday, but we responded in the right way and we come out of the weekend with three points on the board.”

Phantoms’ dominance was highlighted by the shot count as they unleashed 57 efforts on the Thunder target while restricting their hosts to just 23.

The city men switch their attention back to the NIHL Autumn Cup competition next weekend with home (September 29, 7pm) and away (September 30, 5.30pm) clashes against Sheffield Steeldogs.
