HOCKEY: Can anyone stop City of Peterborough's title charge?

City’s 7-0 thrashing of Havering at Bretton Gate last weekend made it seven straight victories.

It was a win that avenged an early-season defeat and sent City to the top of the scoring charts in the top-flight. They’ve now scored 49 goals in 15 league matches.

Manager Graham Finding was pleased to see all his attacking players on the scoresheet against Havering. Shane Vincent scored twice in the opening minutes with Ben Read, Ross Ambler, Robbie Muir, Adam Wilson and Joe Finding also finding the back of the net.

City travel to ninth-placed Cambridge University this Saturday.

“The tough fixtures keep on coming,” manager Finding said. “The University team is currently in transition, but they usually finish somewhere near the top of the table.

“It’s a very hard location to come away with three points, but we go there in good form and it’s the sort of game we need to win if we are to keep the title push on track.

“We were very dominant against Havering from start to finish. A repeat of that performance would be good.”

City of Peterborough’s National Mixed Cup campaign ended in the first round after an 11-goal thriller away to Wisbech.

City led 4-3 at half-time, but eventually succumbed to a Sam Blunt hat-trick and a late winner from Charlie Paine who was scoring her second of the game. Tom Culshaw scored the other Wisbech goal.

Paul Hillsdon, Chris Porter, Joe Finding, Robyn Gribble and Mel Ludlam scored for City.

Spalding men kept alive their slim promotion hopes in the Premier B Division with a 4-3 win at Wisbech last weekend. Stuart Cunnington scored a hat-trick.

Third-placed Spalding have a must-win home game against second-placed Norwich City on Saturday.
