HOCKEY: All smiles in the Retro Camp as first-timers win Brummitt Trophy
A team comprising four locally-based National League players - Cameron Heald (Cambridge City), Chris Porter (Oxted), and sisters Emma & Annie Dalton (ISCA) - were hot favourites to beat reigning champions Ragamuffins in the final at Bretton Gate.
But a sterling defensive effort and some fine goalkeeping from Callum Rigby of Ragamuffins kept the match scoreless and sent the teams into ‘shuttles’, a penalty shoot out competition that involves individual players having 20 seconds to score past a goalkeeper.

Hide AdPorter, Annie Dalton, Heald and Sam Anderson all beat Rigby, but Emma Faux and Lauren Finding both failed to score past Camp Retro keeper Tom Pinegar, no disgrace that as he was in goal for crack National League side Cannock at the start of the season. Rigby did thwart Emma Dalton, while Jordan Heald - Cameron’s older brother - and Julian Catto converted for Ragamuffins, but it was Camp Retro who took the honours 4-2.
That was a fair outome as they had dominated possession during regulation time.
Camp Retro won their previous six matches in the 58th edition of the Brummitt without conceding a goal. They pipped regular finalists Jurassic Beavers 1-0 in a crucial pool match on the second day of competition.
Ragamuffins A also won all six of their group matches and conceded just one goal.

Hide AdSixteen teams entered the two-day event with Sons of Pitches claiming the Plate Final for the third year in a row. They were far too strong for Ragamuffins B who were despatched 4-1 thanks to goals from Adam Wilson, Phoebe Tomlinson, Katherine Amps and Grady Wing. Joe Phillips claimed Ragamuffins’ consolation goal in the final seconds of a final which saw three players sin-binned for dissent, most unusually for a mixed hockey match.
The teams were split into four pools on the opening day with the top two in each group moving through to Trophy groups the following day and the bottom two going through to contest the Plate groups. The winners of the groups on the second day then went straight into finals.
Inches of Posts won the Jack Rouse Fair Play Trophy and competition organiser Sue McNaughton was presented with the Don Warm Merit Trophy for services to the Brummitt.
The Bourne Again team contained two over 70s players in Mick Ward and Sue Drake.
