TRANSFER LATEST: Posh agree fee to sign Colchester midfielder

Peterborough United are understood to have agreed a £500,000 fee with Colchester United for highly-rated midfielder George Moncur.

But a report in today’s (June 13) East Anglian Times suggests Championship side Barnsley have also agreed to pay the asking price for the 22 year-old.

Moncur still has a year left on his contract with Colchester, but as soon as the Essex-based club’s relegation to League Two was confirmed towards the end of last term, his departure has been seen as inevitable.

Barnsley, who were promoted to the Championship last season, had a £400,000 offer for Moncur rejected only last week, while Posh have reportedly been tracking the ex-West Ham play-maker for several months.

Moncur, who scored 14 goals in a struggling side last season, would seem an ideal target for new Posh manager Grant McCann who wants to impose a traditional passing game on his team next season, but the lure of Championship football could well prove decisive.

Posh director of football Barry Fry admitted to the Peterborough Telegraph last month that the club had made a ‘big bid’ for a player. He hoped to secure the deal at last week’s Football League Annual General Meeting in Portugal.

The PT has been unable to contact Fry or McCann today.
