Spalding United's FA Cup dreams are dashed in shocking style, grim night for Stamford AFC, Bourne Town and Netherton United, but March Town hit the top
Spalding United’s dream of reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in 62 years ended in tears on Tuesday night.
’The Tulips’ were well beaten 4-0 in a fourth qualifying round replay at lower level Alvechurch Town. Alvechurch now go on to play at League One side Plymouth Argyle in the first round.
It was immensely disappointing for Spalding who had drawn the first game 2-2 at the Sir Halley Stewart Field on Saturday after leading 2-0 going into the final 10 minutes.
Alvechurch scored twice in each half to record a convincing win. To rub salt into Spalding wounds top scorer Bart Cybulski saw a second-half penalty saved.
It was also a grim night for Stamford AFC and Bourne Town who are involved in relegation dogfights.
Stamford have picked up just one point from 13 Southern Premier Division Central games after a 3-0 defeat at Hitchin Town last night. They are already nine points from safety.
And Bourne dropped into the Northern Premier Midlands Division relegation zone after a 3-2 loss at home to Mickleover. Dan Forbes fired ‘The Wakes’ in front with an outstanding strike and Zac Allen converted a penalty to make it 2-2, but the visitors re-took the lead in first-half added time and there were no further goals.
March Town jumped to top of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division with a 3-0 home win over Heacham, but Netherton United were beaten 6-1 at higher lever St Neots in a Hinchingbrooke Cup tie.
Blackstones are in Hinchingbrooke Cup action at home to Eaton Socon on Wednesday night when there is a local derby between FC Peterborough and Yaxley at the Millfield Auto Parts Stadium (7.45pm).
