POSH REACTION: A 4-1 win, yet the best Peterborough United players were at the back
Peterborough United played with great spirit and commitment to win 4-1 at Colchester in League One today (April 16).
The final scoreline flattered Posh. but there were still some excellent individual displays, particularly at the back.
Ben Alnwick: A cracking penalty save was the highlight of an outstanding display. Made saves with his feet and legs, as well as his hands, and his handling of crossess and general decision-making was outstanding 9
Ricardo Santos: Horrible first-half at right-back which included the concession of a penalty and a yellow card for persistent fouling. Looked odds on to pick up a red card, but he settled down to play with good discipline after the break. One or two decent blocks 5.5
Michael Smith: He never looks happy when asked to play left-back. Struggled to clear the ball at times and found both wingers, Massey and Lee, a handful. Substituted midway through the second-half with an injury 5.5
Jack Baldwin: He defended the penalty area very well, winning tackles and headers and getting in the way of shots, but his distribution can be awful and he got away with a couple of dreadful passes into danger areas here 6.5
Michael Bostwick: His manager found the right word to describe the captain’s display: ‘sensational’. He must have thrown himself in the way of half-a-dozen goal-bound strikes and he must have intercepted a dozen dangerous crosses into the Posh penalty area 9
Chris Forrester: He still accepts the ball better under pressure than any other Posh player, but he is not covering as much ground as he did earlier in the season and he is not dominating the ball like he was when fit and fresh 6
Harry Beautyman: A good shift from the energetic midfielder, mostly while defending, but he also made a couple of promising bursts forward. Did a good job harrying and pressing opposition midfielders 7
Jon Taylor: Took the early goal very well and was a constant menace breaking forward when he used his pace to great effect. Could have claimed a hat-trick as he missed a sitter in the first-half and struck a post after the break. Created the third goal with a terrific run. Played when under the weather to his great credit 8
Erhun Oztumer: Played a brilliant early pass which should have led to a second Taylor goal, but he struggled thereafter. When the manager says some players look tired, he probably has Oztumer in mind. Should have scored just before the interval 5
Marcus Maddison: Always a threat when in possession thanks to his direct running and dribbling skills. Created chances for others before scoring the final goal after a strong 60-yard run 7
Aaron Williams: Helped create the second minute goal, but he was largely anonymous after that. Substituted 25 minutes from time 5
Andrew Fox: (for Smith, 66 mins).
Shaquile Coulthirst: (for Williams, 66 mins).
Leo da Silva Lopes: (for Oztumer, 76 mims).
Lee Angol: (not used).
Martin Samuelsen: (not used).
Gaby Zakuani: (not used).
Mark Tyler: (not used).
