PLAYER RATINGS: Oxford 2-1 Posh - Gwion shines in disappointing defeat

Jack Baldwin had a match to forget against Oxford this afternoon (Saturday, August 20), but there were some positive displays going forward.

Ben Alnwick - Tried to pick out Andrew Hughes with his clearances but had mixed success. Not at fault with the goals but one poor save fortunately did not go to an Oxford player 5

Michael Smith - Positional play not the best and Oxford’s best openings tended to come from his side. Didn’t show as much as Hughes going forward either 5

Jack Baldwin - Criticised for a “stupid” sending off by his manager after giving away the match-winning penalty. Started well but also twice gave the ball away under no pressure. Suspended now and might struggle to get straight back in if Ryan Tafazolli is fit 4

Michael Bostwick - Been excellent in recent weeks. Not quite as dominating here but there was the odd good block and he was strong in the air 6

Andrew Hughes - A good attacking outlet in the first-half. Looked happier defensively as well than his last away match with Oxford attacking more down the other flank 7

Chris Forrester - Set a good tempo in the first-half with his passing and movement. Booked for diving and taken off after an hour over fears he would get a second yellow from a card-happy ref 7

Jermaine Anderson - Came into the game after an hour when he appeared to have more freedom to go forward. Saw one shot saved and looked a threat. Quiet in the first-half 6

Marcus Maddison - As quiet a performance as it is possible to remember from the maverick. Against a defence struggling with injuries it seemed the perfect chance to take centre stage but aside from one free-kick which was easily saved it’s hard to remember much happening. Subbed after 73 minutes 5

Paul Taylor - It’s great fun to watch Taylor play. He is lively and skilful and seems to conjure chances up. His best moment was his fine footwork before setting up Nichols for the equaliser. Harshly booed by the home fans after being fouled 7

Gwion Edwards - He appeared down the left and right, always running and always looking a threat. Could have won a penalty when he was adjudged to have been fouled just outside the area and played a great pass to Anderson which almost led to a goal 8

Tom Nichols - A quiet game but was so impressive with how he took Taylor’s pass, sidestepped the goalkeeper then found the roof of the net 7

Substitutes

Leo Da Silva Lopes (for Forrester, 62 minutes) - Screened the back four well allowing Anderson to get forward 6

Adil Nabi (for Maddison, 73 minutes) - Was happy to get on the ball and run at defenders, but when offered a chance to shoot he cut back onto his right foot and was tackled 5

Shaquile Coulthirst (for Taylor, 78 minutes) - Not hugely involved in the frantic last few minutes 5
