It would have been some line-up available to Posh in the Championship last season, especially if the few good loan players had also been persuaded to stay.
Here’s an all-star Posh squad from players let go during that period with the only proviso being they are still active now. It’s fair to say the games would have been high-scoring!
Starting XI has been picked in a 3-4-3 formation.

13. RICARDO SANTOS
Left on a free transfer to Barnet after 75 Posh appearances (1 goal) between January 2014 and January 2017. The giant centre-back showed flashes of ability, but not enough to get a better move than one to Barnet. But, to his credit, he's turned himself into a strong League One defender with Bolton Wanderers and won the Trotters' player-of-the-year prize last season. Photo: Joe Dent

14. STEVEN BENDA
11 appearances on loan from Swansea City between January 2022 and May 2022. It's a disappointment to many Posh fans that the goalkeeper who made such a strong impression on loan at London Road last season is not now expected to return. Photo: Joe Dent

15. LEE TOMLIN
Sold to Middlesborough for £1.5 million after 156 Posh appearances and 43 goals between August 2010 and February 2014. Tomlin struggled to get a game for Walsall last season, but I've included him here for nostalgic reasons as one of the club's greatest attacking talents. Photo: david lowndes

16. NATHANIEL MENDEZ-LAING
Left Posh on a free transfer after exactly 100 apperances (over 2 spells and 64 were sub appearances) and 11 goals. The winger joined Rochdale initially, but got himself into shape and ended up playing almost 100 games for Cardiff City, including a season at Premier League level. Off-field issues set him back, but did ok in League One with Sheffield Wednesday last season. Photo: Joe Dent
