Automatic promotion places have changed hands as have play-off places. Some teams have emerged from the pack to claim a top six finish and a place in the play-offs.
In one season there was a 16-point swing over the final nine games between a team that jumped from seventh to fifth and a team that dropped from fourth to ninth.
In only two of the last 10 seasons have positions remained largely unaltered on the run in, but never in the last decade has the top of the League One table been so tight in terms of points won at a similar stage.
The current top eight in League One are: 1 Coventry 67pts (34 matches), 2 Rotherham 62 (35), 3 Oxford 60 (35), 4 Portsmouth 60 (35), 5 Fleetwood 60 (35), 6 POSH 59 (35), 7 Sunderland 59 (36), 8 Wycombe 59 (34).
There are just three points between second-placed Rotherham and eighth-placed Wycombe.
Here is how the last 10 seasons panned out. We’ve picked dates when Posh (or MK Dons when Posh were in the Championship) had nine League One matches to play.
The figures in (brackets) are the number of matches played on the date shown.
