Why a Peterborough United move for a young Premier League striker fell through

Peterborough United have missed out on a young Premier League forward because of the player’s wage expectations.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony made the revelation during an appearance on TalkSPORT on Friday.

MacAnthony said: “I was trying to sign a player last week, but he’s already on 11 grand a week at the age of 19.

"He has a year left on his current deal. We wanted to do a four-year deal, but he didn’t want to leave for another year because he wants his money. That sort of money is way above our pay range, so now he’s going to spend the year at his current club and possibly go out on loan. He could be a disaster and where he’s going after that?”

Posh had success taking Jimmy-Jay Morgan on loan from Chelsea last season, but MacAnthony is now not keen on loaning forwards as there is no value in it for his club. Morgan earned a big-money move to Championship side West Bromwich Albion on the back of his 14-goal season at Posh, but was Chelsea who cashed in.
