After leaving Posh in a reported £10 million move to Championship side Brentford in the summer the classy all-round striker has scored 14 goals in 16 second tier games.
Toney, who started 77 times for Posh in two seasons after a £300k move from Newcastle United and rattled in 49 goals, is already being touted as a transfer target for Premier League clubs.
He wouldn’t be the first ex-Posh player to get to the top-flight. In the past the club has seen former players win international caps, Premier League titles, European competitions, play in World Cups and win the FA Cup.
Others have gone on to enjoy excellent careers with big clubs in big competitions and we recognise those players here.
The PT’s top 12 Posh achievers (in reverse order)...
1.
JIMMY BULLARD: Posh years 2001-03, Posh apps 77. This free transfer signing from West Ham was an instant hit at Posh thanks to his dashing midfield performances in a side always expected to struggle in the third tier. Posh pretty much gave him away to Wigan for £275k and from there he moved to Fulham for £2.5 million and then Hull City for £5 million, but there was no sell-on fee for Posh as Barry Fry didn't negotiate that transfer. He played for both clubs in the Premier League. Bullard is now a presenter on ailing Sky TV show Soccer AM.
2.
RUSSELL MARTIN: Posh years 2008-2010, Posh apps 66. Remarkably this full-back was a makeweight in the deal that also brought Sergio Torres to London Road from Wycombe. Martin was outstanding as Posh won promotion to the Championship in 2011, but left for Norwich the following season. The Canaries were a League One side at the time, but Martin was with them on their rapid journey to the Premier League and played over 300 times for the club before moving on to Rangers, Walsall and MK Dons. He now manages the latter. Martin also won full international caps for Scotland.
3.
COLIN CLARKE: Posh years 1981-1984, Posh apps 94. Judged on three indifferent seasons for Posh, few would have predicted this striker would have gone on to enjoy such a fine career. Clarke was signed from Ipswich as a teenager after impressing in Tommy Robson’s testimonial, but he was inconsistent managing 22 goals in 94 games. He joined Tranmere on a free transfer and his career promptly took off as he became a prolfic goalscorer for Rovers and then for Bournemouth. He went to the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico with Northern Ireland, scoring against Spain in a 2-1 defeat. Clarke’s form in Mexico won him a move to top-flight Southampton for whom he scored 20 goals in his first full season including a hat-trick on debut against QPR. He subsequently joined QPR for a club record £800k. His 13 Northern Ireland goals was a record for a time. Photo: Midlands
4.
RYAN BENNETT: Posh years: 2009-2012. Posh apps: 100. This smooth central defender was picked up by Posh for a reported £500k from Grimsby aged just 19. It seemed a lot at the time and it took Bennett a little time to get going at Posh as managers like Mark Cooper and Gary Johnson failed to appreciate his talents. Darren Ferguson did though and Bennett was a star in the Posh promotion campaign of 2010-11 and a successful season in the Championship the following year. A move was predictable and Bennett joined Norwich after seemingly being set for Swansea. He helped the Canaries into the Premier League and he did the same at Wolves. He played particularly well in the top flight for the latter. Bennett is still going strong in the second tier at the age of 30 as he joined promotion contenders Swansea on a free transfer this season. Photo: Midlands
