To lighten the mood what about these sales when Posh managed to persuade other clubs to pay way over the odds for certain players.
Posh came close to pulling off another remarkable deal last January when accepting a reported £2 million fee for central defender Emmanuel Fernandez. Unfortunately a player who has struggled for consistency turned the move down.

5. LEO DA SILVA LOPES - £1 million Wigan Athletic
After 107 Posh appearances - few of them outstanding - Posh somehow persuaded Championship club Wigan to part with a seven-figure fee for a 19 year-old midfielder. The step up in standard predictably proved too much and Da Silva Lopes managed just three appearances for 'The Latics' and didn't start a league game for them before joining Gillingham on loan. 6. LUKE STEELE - £500k from Manchester United
The locally-reared goalkeeper had played just twice for Posh when Manchester United paid half a million quid for him in June 2002. Steele was 17 at the time. He never made it at United which cost Posh a potential £2 million in further fees, but the former Glinton schoolboy went on to enjoy a fine and lengthy career in the Football League. Photo: PT

7. JOE TAYLOR - £500k from Luton Town
This striker hadn't started a single Football League game for Posh when Championship side Luton Town made what seemed like a ridiculous offer. Naturally it was accepted and Taylor went on to help 'The Hatters' to the Premier League. Taylor is now back in League One with Huddersfield Town. Photo: David Lowndes

8. DAVE ROBINSON - £450k from Notts County
Robinson was an outstanding performer in the Posh promotion season of 1991-92, but he had knee problems at the start of the following season. That didn't stop Notts County manager Neil Warnock offering a £450k fee and the deal was hastily completed. It was a club record fee for a Posh player at the time, but Robinson managed just three appearances for County before retiring because of injury. Photo: David Lowndes
