It was the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy back then and League One Posh, who start their 2022-23 EFL Trophy campaign at home to Stevenage on Tuesday (7.30pm), triumphed 3-1 over League Two Chesterfield at the National Stadium in front of 35,663 fans.
On-loan forward Josh McQuoid and centre-back Shaun Brisley gave Posh an early 2-0 lead before Eoin Doyle pulled a goal back for Chesterfield early in the second-half.
Posh midfielder Joe Newell was then sent off midway through the second-half by referee Andy D’Urso after kicking out at an opponent, but a penalty from Britt Assombalonga 12 minutes from time sealed victory for a Posh side managed by Darren Ferguson.
It was a gifted Chesterfield side managed by Paul Cook who also included current Ipswich Town midfielder Sam Morsy, current Bolton manager Ian Evatt and current Leeds United centre-back Liam Cooper in their starting line-up.
Here we look at what happened to the Posh heroes from that day….

9. DANNY SWANSON
This skilful midfielder never really came to terms with the rigours of the Football League following his move to Posh from Dundee United in June, 2012. The Scotsman made 79 Posh appearances, scoring 4 goals, before moving back north of the border, after a short spell at Coventry City, with Hearts after a loan spell at St Johnstone. He's kept on the move in Scotland, joining St Johnstone permanently and going back to them after another short stint at Hibs. 10. JOSH MCQUOID
Attacking midfielder McQuoid (pictured left after scoring at Wembley) only played 16 times (9 starts) for Posh in the 2013-14 season while on loan from Bournemouth and he scored one other goal for the club. The 32 year-old had a multi-club loan career also appearing for Luton, Coventry, Stevenage and Torquay before moving permanently to Aldershot of the National League. He left for Weymouth in 2019 and stayed 3 years before rejoining Aldershot in July. Photo: david lowndes

11. BRITT ASSOMBALONGA
Assombalonga (pictured scoring from the penalty spot at Wembley) was a brilliant striker for Posh scoring 33 goals (58 appearances) in his one season at the club after moving from Watford for a club record £1.25 million in July, 2013. Posh sold him to Forest for £5.5 million the following summer and he then went to Middlesbrough for £15 million 3 years later. Surprisingly left the English game at the age of 28 to join Adana Demirspor in Turkey and Soccerbase says he has made more substitute appearances than starts for his latest club. 12. JACK PAYNE
Midfielder Payne (pictured right) came on as a sub for McCann in the 67th minute at Wembley. He looked a class signing even at £750k when moving to London Road from Gillingham in July 2013 after a loan spell at the club, but his form tailed off when Posh returned to League One and he was once accused of trying to engineer a move back to Gillingham by Darren Ferguson. After a loan spell at Orient, Payne moved to Blackpool on a free transfer after 105 appearances and 6 goals in August, 2016. He didn't discover his best form at Bloonfield Road either and drifted into non-league with Eastleigh, then League Two at Crawley and he's now back in the National League with Boreham Wood at the age of 32.
