Over 80% of Posh fans who responded to a Peterborough Telegraph poll said they would be pleased to see Marriott back at the Weston Homes Stadium.
But would it work out well for player and club? There are always pros, cons and gambles with any transfer and we look at the issues right here...
5.
POSITIVE: It doesn't take much of an imagination to see Marriott playing well alongside Jonson Clarke-Harris. The speed of Marriott would complement the strength of his prospective partner and both are expert finishers.
6.
NEGATIVE: Are Posh really likely to play two up top at Championship level? It's unlikely and if Posh go with one down the middle up front it will be Clarke-Harris as manager Darren Ferguson likes a physical player in that role, one capable of holding the ball up to help the side go forward. Where then would the much smaller, yet far more nimble, Marriott fit in? He's not a replacement for Siriki Dembele and he's not going to play the Sammie Szmodics role.
7.
POSITIVE: Posh can't expect to create so many scoring chances at Championship level so they must ensure they convert a high percentage of them. Marriott was deadly in his one previous season at Posh (33 goals in 56 appearances) and he scored a creditable 13 goals in his first season in the Championship at Derby, although he did have future internationals Mason Mount and Harry Wilson setting them up for him. A 15-goal striker could well keep Posh up.
8.
NEGATIVE: Marriott last scored a Championship goal in September, 2020 at Luton Town in a 2-1 Derby defeat. He hasn't scored in his last 15 appearances so confidence won't be high.
