With Ferguson now sitting on 501 games managed for Posh, bringing up the milestone 500 against Huddersfield last Tuesday (November 2), he has seen hundreds of players come and go from the club.
Some better than others and some with that bit of magic that has carried all the way to England’s top tier. There are nine in total, excluding loan signings, and they are listed below. They are listed from least Premier League appearances to the most and there are four centurions. Can you guess who the player with the most is?
5. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing
Premier League apps: 20, 4 goals Not the most fondly remembered player on this list. His spells at the club in 2010-11 and then again between 2012 and 2015 will be forever remembered for his love of a step-over though. A player that seemed to improve a lot after leaving the club and really found a home at Rochdale. His performances there impressed Cardiff boss Neil Warnock who he played 38 times for in the Championship on their way to the Premier League in 2018. In their one season there, he collected 20 appearances, 11 from the start. Photo: Midlands
6. George Boyd
Premier League apps: 101, 9 goals Boyd arrived at Posh from Stevenage just days before Ferguson arrived but played under him for seven seasons and before moving onto Hull in 2013. It should have been Forest but for an eye test! but Boyd won't mind that as the Tigers gave him the opportunity to reach the promised land. After a season there and an FA Cup final to boot, he moved onto Burnley and impressed with his attitude and work rate. Scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Man City in 2015 surely ranks as his Premier League highlight.
7. Ryan Bennett
Premier League apps: 111, 3 goals A masterful pick-up from Ferguson from Grimsby but he would not have long to enjoy him. He was sacked in November 2009 after signing Bennett in the October. He was soon back at the club though and paired him with Gaby Zakuani to great success. He left for Norwich in 2012 and enjoyed a slightly frustrating time, picking up double figures, appearances wise in the Premier League but he was never a regular. His best season in the league was 2018-19, when he played 34 times as Wolves finished 7th. An unsuccessful spell at Leicester last season was his last Premier League involvement for now. 8. Russell Martin
Premier League apps: 125, 8 goals The pair have recently met as managerial foes but were once manager and captain. Ferguson spotted Martin playing for Wycombe and brought him in, in 2008, and made him captain. Martin spent a year and a half at Posh before actually taking a step down to join Norwich in League One. They went back-to-back though and Martin spent two seasons at the Canaries, playing four seasons in the Premier League.
