In a couple of hours on Twitter last week, Posh fans nominated 15 different prospective bosses, including current incumbent Darren Ferguson, who, as things stand, will leave London Road at the end of the season.
There are a few past promotion winners from League One available or it could be MacAnthony makes a left-field appointment as he did so successfully with Ferguson 16 years ago.
Former Posh players have also been nominated as was relegation-bound Cambridge United manager Mark Bonner.
As the latter’s backer Simon Hull said ‘the last manager we got from there did okay’ in a reference to the late, great Chris Turner.
Turner of course had a fantastic career as a Posh player to make up for a connection with a fierce local rival.
Here’s the lowdown on some of the suggestions from Posh fans…

13. NEIL CRITCHLEY
His managerial stock couldn't have been higher at Blackpool after leading them into the Championship alongside Posh in 20/21 and then doing what Darren Ferguson couldn't by keeping his side in the second tier comfortably. Critchley left to join Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa which didn't work out and then joined QPR in the Championship which didn't work out either. Could be looking for a way back in and he might have to re-start in League One. Posh prospects 7/10. Photo: Ryan Hiscott

14. ROBBIE FOWLER
The LIverpool goalscoring legend was a front runner to replace Karl Robinson at Oxford where he had an informal coaching position, but he missed out and still hasn't managed in this country. He has managed in India, Australia and Thailand which hardly equips him for League One. MacAnthony is a Liverpool fan, but he's also a ruthless businessman so sentiment won't come into play. 15. DARREN FERGUSON
Of course there can't be a Posh managerial search without a mention for the most successful club boss of all time, a League One promotion specailist to boot. Part of me suspects MacAnthony would love to re-appoint Ferguson, the current short-term manager, on a permament basis which in turn could depend on how well this season pans out.
