In a couple of hours on Twitter last week, Posh fans nominated 15 different prospective bosses, including current incumbent Darren Ferguson, who, as things stand, will leave London Road at the end of the season.
There are a few past promotion winners from League One available or it could be MacAnthony makes a left-field appointment as he did so successfully with Ferguson 16 years ago.
Former Posh players have also been nominated as was relegation-bound Cambridge United manager Mark Bonner.
As the latter’s backer Simon Hull said ‘the last manager we got from there did okay’ in a reference to the late, great Chris Turner.
Turner of course had a fantastic career as a Posh player to make up for a connection with a fierce local rival.
Here’s the lowdown on some of the suggestions from Posh fans…

9. KARL ROBINSON
Not sure what MacAnthony's views on Robinson are these days, but he did rate him highly when MK Dons turned into big Posh rivals. Encouraged an attractive style of football which is a big plus and his Oxford side really should have been promoted from League One in the Covid-shortened season. Went stale there and sacked earlier this year, but at 42 he's young enough to bounce back. Posh prospects 7/10. Photo: Richard Heathcote

10. LEAM RICHARDSON
An affable character who took Wigan to the League One title last season. Sacked this season although his hands were tied behind his back at Championship level. An interesting potential candidate. Posh prospects 7/10. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall

11. RUSSELL MARTIN
A popular, and very good, Posh player of the past. He employs a particular brand of possession-based football which can delight and frustrate in equal measures. Swansea are in a terrible run of form, but the club have promised Martin he will be in charge next season so Posh can forget about him. Posh prospects 1/10. Photo: Michael Steele

12. LUKE WILLIAMS
Williams has come to national prominence by leading Notts County's battle for the National League title against cash-rich Wrexham. But he's been about a while earning himself a fine reputation as a coach under Russell Martin at MK Dons and Swansea, after a brief spell managing Swindon Town. MacAnthony has been known to take a punt on a non-league manager before, although it didn't work out to well. Posh prospects 8/10. Photo: Dan Istitene
