The injuries that cost Peterborough United £8 million

Peterborough United co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has revealed cruciate knee ligament injuries to Jermaine Anderson and Jack Baldwin cost Posh about £8 million in transfer fees.

Midfielder Anderson was back in the headlines last weekend after scoring twice for Aldershot in a 3-0 National League win over Woking.

“Jermaine was a Rolls Royce when he came to us as a youngster from Arsenal,” MacAnthony said on his popular ‘Hard Truth’ podcast. “And when he added goals to his game under Graham Westley he became a midfield powerhouse who attracted interest from Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth.

“We turned a £2 million bid down knowing we would get £4 million, but then he ruptured his ACL. He fought back from that, but then did the ACL in his other knee and he then struggled to come back.

“I’d love him to get another chance, but ACL injuries to Jermaine and to Jack Baldwin cost us about £8 million.”

Anderson moved into the Posh Academy after his release from Arsenal and made his first team debut aged 16 in a Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers in 2012.

Anderson went on to make 97 Posh appearances and scored eight goals, five of them in a four-game spell in the 2015-16 season, but he suffered his first ACL injury two matches later.

Anderson fought back to fitness for the start of the following season, but he was never the same player and he damaged the ACL in his other knee before going on loan to Doncaster and Bradford City.

He signed for City permanently in July 2019, but was released at the end of the season and moved to Aldershot.

Centre-back Baldwin is now at League One rivals Bristol Rovers.
