Relegation seemed inevitable from the very early stages and the dreaded drop was confirmed by Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.
Here are a dozen matches that emphasise what went wrong over the last nine months.
9. February 16, 2022: Posh 0, Reading 0.
Posh had a whole host of key games in February against relegation rivals in what Ferguson described as a 'make or break' month. Those games finished 0-4, 0-1, 0-0, 0-1 and 0-3. The biggest was the goalless draw against Reading when Joe Ward missed a great chance to win another poor game which would have taken Posh above their opponents . 10. February 26, 2022: Posh 0, Hull 3.
Grant McCann was back as Posh boss and it was all set up for a fairytale return as his first official opponents were Hull City, the club who had unfairly sacked him a month earlier. Hull were in terrible form, but cantered to a 3-0 win at the Weston Homes Stadium. No blame should be attached to McCann, but a lot of hope had been attached to a new manager bounce which eventually arrived too late to make a difference. Photo: Joe Dent/theposh.com. Photo: Joe Dent
11. April 5, 2022: Posh 1, Luton 1.
Okay things already looked bleak by the time this game arrived, but the incompetence of others was still offering hope. Failing to complete a come-from-behind win against promotion-seeking opponents when Jack Taylor (pictured) missed a glorious late chance was a damaging blow. Posh had failed again to apply pressure on erratic Reading, the only team they could catch. Photo: Joe Dent/theposh.com. Photo: Joe Dent
12. April 23, 2022: Posh 0, Nottingham Forest 1
Even a win on Saturday would have kept the season alive, but despite a hard-working, committed display Posh lacked the quality to prise open a tough defence. That lack of Championship quality, after Dembele had left in January at least, was apparent all season. Photo: Joe Dent/theposh.com. Photo: Joe Dent
