The post of Peterborough United manager is vacant following tonight’s resignation of Darren Ferguson (February 20).
Ferguson spurned a pay-off to make way for the new man and a quick appointment is expected as Posh have a tough Championship match at leaders Fulham on Wednesday (February 23). The PT has compiled its own 10-man shortlist of old favourites, experienced bosses and emerging managerial prospects.
We’re talking permanent appointments here, although Posh could go for an interim manager until the end of the season.
FOR: MacAnthony loves a left-field appointment and poaching a successful Cambridge United boss would appeal to his sense of mischief. Bonner has done an exceptional job at the 'Us' so imagine what he could do with a far superior playing squad. He won't be on a big wage at Cambridge so compensation could be affordable. AGAINST: He's a Cambridge United fan. He's inexperienced certainly at Championship level. The Posh job might be too big for him.
FOR: Highly respected coach within professional football and I'm sure Darragh MacAnthony is a fan of his style of play. He can attract good loan players and he can improve footballers quickly. AGAINST: He's under contract at Lincoln and Posh might not want to pay compensation, although they haven't had to pay Darren Ferguson off.
FOR: He's done an outstanding job at Cheltenham Town and seems destined for bigger and better things so why not with Posh? Played at a good level so knows the game. AGAINST: He would probably have to modify his preferred style of play to appease the locals and the owners. Posh don't have a serious long throw man for a start.
