Practice paid off for young Peterborough United midfielder who enjoyed a very special moment

Practice paid off for young Peterborough United midfielder Donay O’Brien-Brady as he claimed the first goal of his senior career.

The 20 year-old struck a precise low shot into the bottom corner of the Stevenage net in the early stages of a 2-1 win. It was a fantastic moment for a player who has been converted into a deep-lying midfielder this season. Kwame Poku went to on to clinch the three points with a 94th-minute strike.

"It was a great feeling to get my first goal and more importantly for the team to win,” O’Brien-Brady told the Posh media team. “I’m playing a bit deeper this season, but I’ve been working in training on arriving late at the edge of the penalty area and it paid off for me. The space was there to shoot when I received the ball, but I felt the defender was going to block it so I chopped back onto my left foot and just concentrated on hitting the ball low and hard.

"I didn’t really know what to do when the ball went in so I just set off towards the fans. It was a great moment for me.

"It was a tough game, very physical and it was hard to stay calm with all the long balls. I need to improve when a game is like that so it will be a good game for me to watch back and learn from it. It was tough when they equalised and the flares were going off in the Stevenage crowd. We were under pressure, but we kept going and late goals are just the best.

"I‘m not sure what Kwame was up to running to their fans and giving them a little ‘shush,’ but it’s all good and hopefully the game will be a turning point and we can kick on.”

Posh are 14th in League One with four wins and four defeats in their first 10 games. They host Stevenage again in an EFL TRophy tie on Tuesday (October 8, 7pm) before Rotherham United visit the Weston Homes Stadium for a League One game next Saturday (October 12, 3pm).
