The big-money summer signing from Bristol City hasn’t scored a League One goal since the final minute of the second game of the season against Fleetwood at the Weston Homes Stadium.

The 25 year-old has appeared in 12 League One games since then. His only other goal arrived against Fulham Under 21s in an EFL Trophy fixture on October 6.

Szmodics is adamant one goal will lead to many more and he’s hopeful he’ll back in scoring form in tomorrow’s important League One clash at promotion rivals Portsmouth when fans will watch a Posh game for the first time this season.

“I’m critical and harsh on myself,” Szmodics told the Posh media team. “I’ve had the chances to score six or seven goals this season.

“I’d be more worried if we weren’t creating chances though and I will never be shy of getting in there and having a go. “I’m a naturally confident person so it isn’t a lack of confidence holding me back it’s more me desperatly chasing a goal.

“I want a goal as much as the fans want me to score and when I get one I reckon there will be a flood of goals for me. “We have goals all across our team, but I need to start chipping in with some.

I’m having a blip in front of goal at the moment, but my general play has been okay. I’ll always give 110%.

“There’s no better time for it to start that at Portsmouth, especially as there will be fans in the ground.

“I’ve hated it without the supporters. I love the atmosphere at a match with fans and I’m sure all players agree with me. I love to showcase my ability and play up to fans.

“We want to win with our fans and when we are behind like at Wimbledon on Wednesday, those fans could get us back in the game.

“There have been moments this season, like my last-minute goal against Fleetwood, when it would have been great to celebrate with the fans.”

Posh trained this afternoon (Friday) and are travelling down to Portsmouth this evening. Posh are third in League One with Portsmouth in sixth place, but a home win tomorrow would lift Pompey above Posh.
