Peterborough United legend Mark Tyler believes the club’s goalkeeping future is in safe hands.

Tyler, who made 494 appearances in goal for Posh in two spells spread over 22 years, is a big fan of current number one Christy Pym and he’s delighted Academy graduate Will Blackmore has been handed a lengthy professional deal.

Tyler currently works with both goalkeepers, as well as first-team back-up Dan Gyollai in his role as Posh ‘keeper coach.

“Christy had a sticky start here, but he’s been exceptional for the most part,” Tyler enthused. “He has a great work ethic, so great I’m often having to drag him off the coaching field. He just wants to practice and play all the time.

“He won the League One Golden Glove prize last season (awarded to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets) and he could win it again this season if we keep defending like we have been doing in recent weeks.

“Christy hates conceding goals. He gets really frustrated when he lets a goal in and I keep telling him to channel that anger into ensuring he keeps improving.”

Pym has kept nine League One clean sheets in 26 games this season, four fewer than Lincoln City’s Alex Palmer.

Blackmore (19) is not an immediate threat to Pym’s place in the first-team, but Tyler is confident he will be seen as a serious challenger in time.

“I’m excited by Will’s potential,” Tyler added.

“There are things he needs to improve on, but he’s developed quickly and I’m thrilled he has the reward of a first-team contract. We haven’t had many goalkeepers come up through the Academy.

“He can’t rest on his laurels and he won’t.

“He works hard every day and is always asking questions about how to improve in different areas.

“Ideally we would have sent him on loan, but with the immediate future of non-league football up in the air we haven’t been able to get anything sorted.

“He’s fitted into the first-team group really well though. They’ve really taken to him.”
