The Posh chief didn’t name the players on his popular ‘Hard Truth’ podcast for fear of alerting other clubs.

MacAnthony said: “An 18 year-old and a 19-year-old playing in League Two are on my radar. My aim is to get them next summer before the likes of Brentford become interested. They are two gems we could polish up.

“It’s easy to get clubs to sell to us because they know they will get money from a transfer fee and subsequent sell-ons than they would from selling direct to a Premier League club.

“It’s usually easy to persude a player to come because of our track record in offering regular football, improving players and then selling them on.

“But it gets more difficult for us when a Championshop club become interested as they can often offer regular football as well.

“I’d say nine times out of 10 a club/player/agent is happy to hear from Peterborough United, but on the other occasion an agent will come along and mess a deal up.

“It happened to us in the summer when we agreed a deal with a player and a club to sign a player from Exeter, but then a new agent came on the scene and eveything changed.

“I knew the agent and I couldn’t stand him. He wanted to see if Championship clubs would be interested in the player and I pulled the plug on the deal. You don’t flirt with us and then go off looking for something better.

“The player is still in League Two now. He might get that big move, who knows, and good luck to him.”

Posh were heavily linked with Exeter wide player Randell Williams in the summer. He is still with the Grecians.
