“I was pleased with our recruitment for this season,” MacAnthony stated. “I was getting stick from some fans for not signing anyone on transfer deadline day, but over the two transfer windows, summer and January, we were the biggest spenders in League One.

“I might have paid over the odds contract-wise, but it’s not an exact science. If you sign four players and two of them come off you’re ahead of the game.

“I’m the deal-maker and it’s down to me. If a deal doesn’t come off I make sure I don’t make the same mistake again.

“I’m still learning at this job after over 14 years at it.

“I have made impulse buys on players we don’t really need in the past, but it’s always done with an intention to help us win games.”

Posh spent close to £2.5 million on forwards Sammie Szmodics and Jonson Clarke-Harris in the summer and around £300k on attacking midfielder Ryan Broom. Midfielder Reece Brown returned on loan from Huddersfield. Broom left on loan for Burton Albion on deadline day.

MacAnthony also revealed on his podcast that he has advised former Posh star and coach Aaron Mclean on his wish to become a director of football. Mclean has been a TV pundit since leaving Posh last summer.
