Peterborough United’s ‘We are the Champions’ night to raise funds for Tommy Robson is postponed

Members of the 1973-74 Fourth Division title-winning squad were planning to attend the reunion night at the Post Office Club on April 16, but organisers are hoping to rearrange for later in the year.

Left-winger Robson was a key man in the Posh team managed by another legend Noel Cantwell that won the 1973-74 Fourth Division title in thrilling fashion.

Among the players who were hopeful of attending were Bert Murray, Dave Gregory, Mick Drewery, Jeff Lee, Eric Steele, Dave Llewelyn, Mick Jones, captain John Cozens and of course Robson.

The team’s first-team coach John Barnwell had also been invited.

Cantwell’s daughter Kate Cantwell-Roach and Turner’s widow Lynne were also planning to attend.

Posh have only won two League titles in the club’s Football League history and none since Cantwell’s heroes went through an entire season at London Road unbeaten as they finished top by three points ahead of Gillingham.

Posh effectively sealed the title by beating Gillingham 4-2 at London Road in front of over 17,000 on an unforgettable night.

Robson, the Posh record appearance holder, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year and has been humbled by the number of fund-raising events held by the club and by fans to make his life more comfortable.
