Peterborough United’s goal-scoring loan star believes he’s joined a side with a great chance of winning promotion

Szmodics claimed his first Posh goal - and his first senior goal since last May - in the 2-1 win over Rotherham United at the Weston Homes Stadium yesterday (January 25).

The 24 year-old has hardly played for Championship side Bristol City since moving to Ashton Gate from League Two side Colchester in the summer so moving to Posh for the rest of the season has given him a new lease of life

Szmodics’ goal yesterday arrived courtesy of a classy finish following an outstanding team move as Posh completed back-to-back home wins against automatic promotion chasers Wycombe and Rotherham.

“I wouldn’t have come to Posh if I didn’t think there was a chance of promotion,” Szmodics said. “The manager and the players are esaily good enough and if I can help them up I’d be delighted.

“Scoring goals is my job, but if we win and I don’t score that’s just as satisfying.

“I was obviously pleased to score. It was a fantastic pass from Dan Butler and I actually thought I’d put the shot wide so I was relieved to see it hit the side-netting and go in.

“We weren’t in great form when I got here, but you’d never have known from the dressing room. Everyone has been in good spirits and the players certainly helped me settle down quickly.

“These last two games have shown what we are capable of doing. We started this game well and then we ground out the win against a very good side.

“We deserved it as well. The lads defended superbly and when Ricky-Jade Jones came on he really stretched the game well for us. We have some good players here and they all work hard for each other which is important. We had to battle hard for three points.

“I was pleased to get 90 minutes in as that’s the first time I’ve managed that since pre-season, but we need to keep going.

“We celebrated the win, but not for too long as we have another game coming up.”

Posh are at Accrington Stanley on Tuesday (January 28) before heading to new League One leaders Ipswich Town next Saturday (February 1).
