Peterborough United’s alternative proposal on how to end the 2019-20 League One season to be be discussed by clubs ahead of EFL vote

Tranmere proposed a points-per-game method, with a margin of error over the last three seasons built in, to award promotions, play-off places and to determine relegations in League One.

Their proposal would automatically promote only current leaders Coventry City and push second-placed Rotherham United into an eight-team play-off with Oxford, Fleetwood, Portsmouth, Posh, Wycombe, Sunderland and Doncaster.

Only current bottom two Southend and Bolton would be relegated. Tranmere, who currently occupy the third relegation slot, would be reprieved and League One would have 25 clubs for one season only.

The proposal, which Posh were happy to back, takes into account how close the promotion race is between several clubs and the fact that Tranmere would have a decent chance of avoiding the drop if the season was played out to a finish.

Portsmouth have already revealed they will not be voting for the Posh/Tranmere proposal.

Other proposals have been accepted by the EFL Board and will also be discussed by clubs before the big vote. These are velieved to include weighted and unweighted points-per-game averages. Weighted points-per-game takes into account home and away form and would favour Posh.

Today’s (June 3) EFL statement read: “The EFL Board met today and considered a number of proposals submitted by EFL clubs in respect of proposed amendments to EFL Regulations in order to determine what will happen in the event the 2019/20 season is curtailed in any EFL Division.

“This now brings an end to a comprehensive consultation phase and cubs have today received formal notice of the meeting which will now take place on Tuesday 9 June 2020.

“At that meeting clubs will consider a number of different proposals from both clubs and the Board of the EFL.”
