Peterborough United Women hit the top of the National League after another late winning goal and next up is the big one between two perfect teams
Another last-gasp goal means Peterborough United have hit the top of National Midlands Division One and set up a humdinger of a title battle against Loughborough Lightning at Yaxley FC on Thursday (October 3, 7.45pm kick off).
Substitute Renai Bennett was the Posh matchwinner at sodden Solihull Moors. She struck in the 98th and final minute for the only goal of the game.
A sixth win out of six for Posh means they are now top as Loughborough’s scheduled fixture at Northampton Town was postponed. The top two both have perfect playing records, but Loughborough have now played a game fewer than Posh.
It was a tough old struggle for Posh at the Studley Sports Centre with heavy rain falling throughout the contest. Posh created plenty of opportunities, but struggled to find a finish with Emma-Mai Bale teeing up Poppie Brown for an 18 yard shot in the sixth minute that scraped a post and Bale then shot over from a Keir Perkins cross. Brown fired just over from a Lauren Wilshaw corner and Hannah Dawborn saw a powerful shot beaten away by the home goalkeeper.

The Posh pressure was as relentless as the rainfall and Bale was thwarted at close range by the in-form ‘keeper and Wilshaw hit a post before the interval.
Bale and Emily Sharpe were the first to threaten without success at the start of the second-half. Bennett came on for Bale just past the hour mark and within 10 minutes she had hit the post from a cross by fellow replacement Emily Meli.
It looked like Perkins has spurned one last chance in the 89th minute with a shot from inside the area that was saved, but Bennett was on hand to strike deep into added time for a team who have specialised in late winning goals all season.
Posh: Corry, Connor, Dawborn, Sharpe (sub Driscoll-King 61 mins), Brown, Lawlor, Reynolds, Wilshaw (sub Meli, 68 mins), Osker, Bale (sub Bennett, 61 mins), Perkins. Unused subs: Meli, O'Neill.
