Peterborough United made hard work of their opening pre-season friendly of the season relying on a late Brad Rolt header to see off Stamford at the Zeeco Stadium (August 1).

Posh often looked like a team who hadn’t played for five months as they struggled to find any fluency to their play, particularly in a tepid first half.

Rolt won a competitive game with a header from a partially-cleared corner 18 minutes from time, but it needed a top stop two minutes later from new signing Dan Gyollai to preserve the lead. Gyollai stretched his considerable frame to divert a powerful effort from Jon Challinor over the crossbar.

Serhat Tasdemir and Louis Reed were both denied by impressive home goalkeeper Dan Haystead during a Posh purple patch early in the second-half, while Siriki Dembele and Idris Kanu both caused problems with their pace late on, but despite an effort from Frankie Kent, which went wide, Posh rarely looked like extending their advantage.

Mo Eisa hadthe best chance of a first-half, but Haystead saved well and Posh rarely threatened the home goal again before the break.

The game was played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus crisis.
