Peterborough United welcome relief package which protects the Posh Academy, but they could miss out on extra funding because they are a well-run club!

Peterborough United co-owner Dr Jason Neale welcomed the relief package deal agreed by the EFL and the Premier League, but warned the £375K Posh are certain to receive won’t come close to covering the club’s predicted losses caused by the coronavirus crisis.

The relief package will provide a combined fund of £50 million for League One and League Two clubs, with £30 million to be paid to all 48 EFL clubs as a grant.

Each League One club will receive a minimum payment of £375,000.

Posh will also apply for a payment from a £15m fund to to be distributed using a lost gate revenue share calculation for the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 seasons. EFL clubs have played virtually the entire season behind closed doors.

There is a also a £20m ‘monitored grant fund’ which clubs can apply for based on ‘need.’ Posh could miss out on a share of this, ironically because they are well run and well funded by Dr Neale and his co-owners Darragh MacAnthony and Stewart Thompson.

There are caveats for clubs applying for a monitored grant though including a transfer embargo and then a limit on the size of transfer fees paid, as little as £20k according to the Daily Mail.

Dr Neale said: “Depending on team performance, our typical annual revenues driven by fan participation are in the region of £5m per year. Whilst we are grateful for the EFL efforts, the guaranteed £375k needs to be put in the context of our loss.

“Naturally, we will seek access to the funding allocated for lost gate revenue, when details of the process are available, as well as the monitored grant portion, although I personally think poorly run clubs will unfairly scope that third pot.

“The bright spot is it seems that the Premiership have dropped their “access to talent” requirements that would have trashed the academy system.

“As before, we rely on the support of the Posh fans who are the only group we can rely on.”
