Peterborough United Under 21s won again thanks to goals from a youngster and a trialist

Peterborough United’s excellent run in the Professional Development Under 21 League continued with a 2-1 win at Coventry City on Tuesday.

The disappointment of not seeing long-term injury victim Rio Adebisi in action, as had been advertised on today’s edition of the chairman’s ‘Hard Truth’ podcast, was followed by more frustration as Coventry took a lead courtesy of a goal from George Shepherd into half-time.

But Posh hit back in the second half to win with a close-range header from Noah Freeman and a goal direct from a free-kick from one of two trialists who started the game.

Adebisi’s absence was unexplained with first-team boss Luke Williams suggesting to local media this afternoon he hadn’t been part of the selection process. He does have a lot on his plate right now to be fair.

Shepherd netted for Coventry on 38 minutes after Bolu Shofowoke and Patrick Sykut had seen shots blocked at the other end. The Posh pair combined again at the start of the second-half when a Sykut shot was parried into Shofowoke’s path, but the striker’s effort on goal was diverted behind by a defender.

Posh then won a flurry of set-pieces and corners and from one of them Freeman equalised on 63 minutes and six minutes later the anonymous trialist won the game.

Posh have now won eight of their 12 league games and sit second in the table behind Sheffield United. Posh are next in Professional Development League action at home to Crewe next Wednesday (November 12).

Posh: Smith, Ndonjang (sub Joseph, 46 mins), Freeman. Mendonca, Claxton, Changunda, Fox, Shofowoke (sub McWilliams-Marcano, 65 mins), Skykut, Trialist A, Trialist B (sub Simmons, 85 mins). Unused Subs: Westcott, Arber.
