The pair have been outstanding since Posh boss Darren Ferguson teamed them up front in the middle of January and both were too hot for Portsmouth to handle at the Weston Homes Stadium yesterday (March 7).

Toney marked his return from a two-match suspension with a goal as Posh beat their League One promotion rivals 2-0 to move to up to fourth, They head a group of five teams on 59 points thanks to a terrific goal difference of +28 after a fifth straight home win.

“My mum said at the start of the season it was about time I won a ‘Golden Boot’,” Toney said. “I thought I would have to buy a ticket to get alongside the big boys at the PFA dinner, but it looks I might get invited.

“I was like a little kid in the morning. I was buzzing to be back in the side. I was so excited I could barely sleep.

“I was desperate to get back to helping the side so to score was great, but to get three points from such a big game was even better.

“We are still aiming for automatic promotion, but we’ll take the play-offs if we have to.

“I’m not quite sure how I managed to score my goal. I just tried to bully the defender and I managed to get something on the ball and it went in.

“I’ve really hit it off with Mo Eisa this season and now I’m getting on well with Siriki and Sammie Szmodics.

“Siriki is the sharpest footballer I’ve ever seen and he could perform in the Premier League. He is that good.

“We’ve really made it difficult for teams to play at our place as well. Teams know they will have to battle against us and we have really hit our stride in home games.”
