Some were quite famous, others had decent back stories, while some delivered infamously poor performances before leaving London Road.
Here the PT remembers 20 of them. How many do you remember?
1.
STEVE MORROW. Apps: 11. An Arsenal defender most famous for dislocating his shoulder when Tony Adams dropped him while celebrating a 1993 League Cup win. Morrow had scored in the Gunners' 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday but he's better remembered for a bit of tomfoolery. Morrow played averagely for Posh in 2001 before leaving for the United States. He was recently sacked from an Arsenal youth coaching position. Photo: Getty Images.
2.
DAVE SWINDLEHURST: Apps: 4. A powerful striker who found fame with Terry Venables' exciting, young 'team of the eighties' Crystal Palace side. He also played for Derby, West Ham United and Sunderland before joining Posh late in 1988 at the fag end of his career. Didn't stay long, but managed to score at both ends in the first 10 minutes of a 5-1 home defeat by Cambridge United, who were then managed by Chris Turner.
3.
DAVE ROGERS: Apps 4. Centre-back who arrived on loan at Posh from Ayr United in 2000 and declared himself to be a 'hard man'. He may well have been, but his one Posh start in a Football League game at Luton lasted about 25 minutes as he so was so bad Barry Fry took him off. Amazingly he persuaded Scunthorpe and Carlisle to give him further Football League appearances.
4.
ASHLEY VICKERS: Apps 1. This lanky centre-back made just one appearance for Posh after they signed him from non-league football in 1997, but it was a rather dramatic one. Vickers was sent off for an horrific tackle in the second-half of a home defeat to Brighton and never played again. He soon quit football and went back to teaching. Photo: Midlands
