Peterborough United showed their promotion credentials by beating Sheffield Wednesday and a FIFA referee for Lincoln City clash

Goalscoring midfielder Jack Taylor believes Posh put their League One promotion credentials on display in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Taylor sealed the win with his first goal of the season 15 minutes from time, a header from eight yards following a precise cross from Ben Thompson.

But it was the response to a poor performance and defeat at Plymouth as well as taking 3 points from a likely promotion rival that impressed the 24 year-old.

“We reacted in a really good way and got what we deserved in the end,” Taylor said.

"At 11 v 11 we were the better side and a red card then helped us.

"We know Sheffield Wednesday are going to be right up there with us at the end of the season so it could be a big win even at this early stage.

“Winning the head to heads against promotion rivals is going to be really important. Beating a team as good as this is good for the confidence as well.

"Obviously I was delighted to get my first goal. I arrived in the box at the right time. It wasn’t the cleanest of headers, but if you’re not there you don’t score.

“We played well. It was great playing alongside Jeando Fuchs again as he was brilliant. You know what you’re going to get with him. He works hard and rats about.”

Taylor scored just four goals for Posh in the 2020-21 League One promotion season.

He and team now turn their attention to the visit of Lincoln City to London Road on Saturday.

The Imps are unbeaten so far having followed 3 draws with a 2-1 Tuesday win at Oxford United which lifted them into 11th place under new manager Mark Kennedy.

The match will be refereed by FIFA official Rebecca Welch. It is the first female appointment to a Posh match.

Welch has been an international referee for the last two years and in 2021 became the first female to be appointed to referee a Football League match when taking charge of Harrogate v Port Vale in League Two.

This her first Football League appointment of this season.
