Peterborough United shock at lack of offers for George Boyd

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry is astonished the club have had no offers for transfer-listed veteran George Boyd.

Boyd was told he had no future at London Road five weeks ago after becoming a victim of the new salary cap rules.

The 34 year-old is understood to be among the highest paid players at the Weston Homes Stadium after returning to Posh on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

Posh will let Boyd leave on a free transfer in recognition of his status as a triple promotion winner during his first spell at the club.

The initial transfer window shuts on Monday (October 5), but English clubs can still transfer players to each other until Friday, October 16 when the salary cap squads have to be confirmed.

Fry said: “I’m astonished at how little interest there has been in George. He’s still a top player with plenty to offer the right club.

“George has been a victim of circumstances here. He is well paid and we had to do some adjusting to fit players into the salary cap.

“I know it was a tough call for the manager to make because of the exceptional relationship he has with George, but it’s hard to fit George into the system he wants to play.

“George still believes he has something to offer us, but what we will do is try hard to get him a move and there will be no fee involved in recognition of what he has done for the club.

“He lives in Manchester and myself and the manager have contacted a few clubs in that area to see if they interested in taking him.

“There’s still time so I’m sure he’ll get sorted out.”

Boyd started 17 League One games for Posh last season

Right-back Jason Naismith is the only other Posh player currently transfer listed and the only club to enquire about him so far are League Two side Walsall.

The Saddlers want to take the 26 year-old on loan, but Naismith is not keen on the move and it’s unlikely the clubs would be able to do a deal on the player’s wages anyway.
