According to an article in today’s (March 12) Times newspaper all football matches in England will be played behind closed doors under government plans to combat coronavirus. That plan could be implemented today.

Under the plans the Premier League and EFL would not be postponed instead all matches will be played without a crowd present.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said today he would prefer a two-week suspension of all matches because of the loss of revenue clubs would inevitably suffer, believing matches could easily be caught up when the crisis passes.

Sesaon ticket holders will be allowed to watch a free stream of the games in their homes, but no games will be shown in pubs so as to avoid congregation of people.

The plan could be implemented once the number of UK coronavirus cases passes 500. Last night it stood at 460.

Posh played Kingstonian in a first round FA Cup replay behind closed doors at London Road in 1992, although that was a result of fan misbehaviour.
