Peterborough United set to make 10 changes for EFL Trophy tie

Peterborough United could make 10 changes to their starting line-up for the EFL Trophy visit of League One rivals Burton Albion to the Weston Homes Stadium tonight (September 8, 7pm kick off).

Centre-back Frankie Kent is expected to retain his place from the side that suffered a disappointing Carabao Cup first round exit at the hands of League Two side Cheltenham Town on Saturday, but only because Frazer Blake-Tracy has picked up a slight hamstring injury.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson is still demanding a huge improvement from his much-changed side. Summer signing Jonson Clarke-Harris is expected to lead the line for at least half of the game as he builds up his fitness.

“I’m pleased we have a game so quickly after Saturday’s disappointing performance,” Ferguson stated. “That was a real head-scratcher as we’d shown nothing like that in our pre-season matches.

“Players will perform poorly from time to time, but there can be no excuse for not reaching the running and sprinting stats we expect. The intensity, the tempo and the press were all way off and I expect better tonight.

“There will be a lot of changes and if I was a player involved tonight I’d know the manager wasn’t happy with the performance on Saturday and I’d be trying my hardest to force my way into the side for this weekend.

“Jonson will play a certain amount of minutes tonight which should enable us to get a certain amount of minutes into him on Saturday as well.

“He’s looking a lot better already. We’ve got a lot of work into him and his attitude has been first class. There is no point in risking an injury with him so early in the season, but I’m looking forward to seeing him play.

“This competition worked well for us last season. We gave a lot of young players their debuts and still won some matches. I’m hoping for the same again, although Burton are a good team.

“I went to watch them play in the cup on Friday night and they are strong and experienced. They might make changes as well, but it’s what we do that interests me.”

Striker Ricky-Jade Jones remains on the sidelines with an ankle injury. He won’t be fit for Saturday’s League One opener at Accrington Stanley (September 12).

Burton signed former Posh favourite Michael Bostwick from Lincoln in the close season. He made his debut in Friday’s Carabao Cup win over Accrington Stanley at the Pirelli Stadium.
