Peterborough United put bodies on the line to collect a sixth clean sheet of the League One season

Peterborough United man-of-the-match Ronnie Edwards praised his team’s ‘over my dead body’ mentality after the 1-0 League One win at Port Vale on Tuesday night.

It was far from the most fluent of Posh performances, but they delivered a mighty defensive effort to stretch an unbeaten League One run to eight matches ahead of a tough trip to Blackpool on Saturday. The Seasiders are two points and a place behind fifth-placed Posh.

Edwards did most to preserve the win at Vale Park, by producing an excellent block on the goal-line midway through the second-half.

"I could see their player was going to chop the ball inside a defender,” Edwards said. “And Nick (goalkeeper Bilokapic) edged to one side of the goal so I covered the other side and luckily I managed to block the shot and the ball didn’t rebound to one of their players.

"It was good to see a game out on a cold Tuesday night at Port Vale. We all remembered what happened at Carlisle, but we stuck together, dug in and defended well from top to bottom to claim the clean sheet. We put bodies on the line.

“It’s a brilliant win for us. They sent big players on like Ikpeazu. The last time I played against him at Cardiff he stood on my foot and i’d never felt anything like it. He won some headers, but we made sure we picked up the second balls. We soaked the pressure up and just got on with it.

"It was a shame we didn’t put the game to bed and we had the chances to do it. It would have made 10 minutes of added time less stressful, but we stayed solid. It wasn’t a perfect defensive display, but it was a very good one.

"The mentality of the players is that we don’t get beaten. We’re on a great run. Okay there have been a few draws in there, but some draws are good ones, like the one with Wycombe at the weekend.

"Ultimately it doesn’t matter how you play. It’s the result that matters.”

Edwards has started all 14 League One games for Posh this season. The teams has now kept six clean sheets, the joint fourth-most in the division behind Portsmouth, Stevenage and Barnsley who have all kept seven clean sheets.
