Peterborough United manager sees the good and bad in a 4-2 win over Peterborough Sports

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson praised an excellent first-half display as his side beat non-league Peterborough Sports 4-2 at the Nene Academy training ground tonight (August 4).

All four Posh goals arrived before the break through Sam Cartwright, George Cooper and two Sports defenders, but Ferguson was less thrilled with a second-half performance which saw Sports claim the only goal.

Posh have now won both of their pre-season friendlies. They host another private game on Saturday (August 8) when two halves of 60 minutes will be played.

“There is always good and bad in pre-season,” Ferguson stated. “The key is to build on the good moments and work hard to improve on the other stuff. We have plenty of time for both.

“I was pleased with the attitude of all the players, The running was good and there was no lack of effort.

“We were excellent in the first-half. We moved the ball much better than we did at the weekend and there were some very good performances.

“Jack Taylor and George Boyd were very good in midfield, while Frankie Kent stepped out from the back well. Cooper claimed a goal and two assists and his set-pieces were very good.

“If we are playing with wing-backs though we have to get the ball to them quickly. We have good one on one attackers, but in the second-half they made things more difficult for us by sitting right off us. That’s something we are going to have to get used to and we must work out a way to combat it. The passing slowed right down in the second half.

“The two goals we lost were very disappointing, but it is very early days yet. We didn’t pick up any injuries, we got another 45 minutes into everyone and there were signs of us taking the structure we’ve worked on into games.”

Teenage forward Flynn Clarke could return to action this weekend.
