A fortuitous own goal from Ipswich Town defender Mark McGuinness sealed a 1-0 win at Portman Road. McGuinness diverted a cross from Posh wing-back Dan Butler into his own net.

That goal was a relief for top scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris who blasted a first-half penalty over the crossbar.

Posh are three points behind top two Hull City and Lincoln City, who both won today (January 23) ahead of a game against lowly Bristol Rovers at the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday (January 26).

“I am really pleased with the result today,” Ferguson stated. “And delighted with my players for what they have put in over the last three matches.

“A clean sheet is the starting point and I felt we were solid all over the pitch, I never really felt they were going to carve us open and over the course of the 90 minutes, we had the best chances. It was a very disciplined away performance.

“We didn’t start the game well, but we grew into it and in the second period of the first half, we played really well. It was a poor penalty from Jonson Clarke-Harris at a time when we were on top in the game.

“We started the second half well and we got a slice of luck with the goal, but that is what the wing-backs are about, getting up and down the pitch, I still felt we could have put more crosses in from that position but we got the goal we were after.

“It has been a great week for us. To play three matches in eight days and come away with nine points is a tremendous effort and I am delighted with the players.

“We now have two more tough games coming up and we have to move onto the next one quickly. We looked mentally and physically strong and you have to have those attributes to win matches and promotions.

“The players have clearly got great togetherness. Their character is strong and as a manager I can’t ask for anymore than that.”
