Peterborough United manager rues a wasted opportunity as Posh drop out of the League One p0lay-off places

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson was in no doubt his side dropped two valuable points in today’s (February 29) 1-1 draw at Burton Albion.

Posh took the lead at the Pirelli Stadium through Mo Eisa’s goal early in the second-half, but conceded an equaliser from a poorly-defended corner 14 minutes later.

Posh dominated possession for large chunks of the contest, but created very little. Burton almost snatched the win in the 90th minute as Posh dropped out of the top six.

“We’ve dropped two big points today,” Ferguson stated. “We can’t afford to let opportunities like this slip away again in the last 10 matches.

“It’s all about winning games at the business end of the season and we had a great chance to do that today.

“We were completely dominant for an hour and then we lost a bad goal from out of nowhere and that gave Burton some confidence. Goals change games and that was the case here,

“The goal started from a poor throw in from us. They then win a corner and score because one player didn’t do his job.

“Up until then they had posed no threat. Set pieces are a big part of football and we don’t score enough and we concede too many.

“There were positives. It was important we didn’t lose back-to-back matches and there were some good individual performances, notably from Mo and from Frazer Blake-Tracy.

“I’m glad I stuck with Mo. He’s a pure finisher, but his all-round display was good today.

“The bottom line is it’s a missed opportunity to make ground on our rivals.

“When we get in front we need to go on and bury opponents. I watched Leeds do that Hull today. It’s what teams who win promotion do.

“But we are back at home next week and we have the best player in the league back for a huge game and he will be nice and fresh. I’m not sure how many games we will will need to win to get into the top two, but I know we need to win the next one.”

Posh host third-placed Portsmouth next Saturday (March 7) and a win would take them above Pompey on goal difference.

Top scorer Ivan Toney will be available for that game after completing a two-game suspension today.
