Goals from Sammie Szmodics and Joe Ward early in each half sealed the win as Posh limbered up for a huge game at Ipswich Town on Saturday (February 1) in fine style.

“I’m delighted with the players again,” Ferguson said. “That was a real professional performance all over the pitch.

“A Tuesday night in Accrington will never be easy and they have some very good players here.

“We started well with a great goal from Sammie after a brilliant run from Siriki Dembele and we also scored at the start of the second-half which really killed the game. We were very comfortable after the second goal and saw the rest of the game out well.

“I was a little worried that the Rotherham match at the weekend might have took too much out of the players and after we scored the first goal we did struggle for 10-15 minutes.

“But we got a second wind towards half-time and took control of the match.

“We proved we can mix it and we can play. We have good players who are willing to tough it out. We have started scoring goals again and we are racking up the clean sheets.

“To come out of a run of two points and one goal in six matches and win three in a row is a credit to the players. We needed it and now we need to stick together and keep going.

“The two games coming up against Ipswich and Oxford could well be pivotal to the rest of the season so I was pleased to get a rest into Sammie, Siriki and Nathan Thompson. There were some tired legs out there, but we have a bit of a rest now before Saturday.”
