Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has praised his players for the way they have responded to the nightmare end to the 2019-20 campaign.

Posh had their chances of promotion from League One dashed last season by a pandemic and the introduction of points-per-game to determine final positions.

But instead of sulking Posh have got behind what co-owner Darragh MacAnthony dubbed ‘Operation Vengeance’ and launched another strong-looking bid for Championship football.

Posh start tomorrow’s (October 31, 3pm) League One clash with Shrewsbury Town at the Weston Homes Stadium in fourth place, just three points behind leaders Lincoln City after a superb run of form in October.

Posh won five matches in a row before drawing 2-2 with rock-bottom Burton Albion at home on Tuesday night (October 27).

“I deliberately haven’t mentioned how last season ended much since we resumed playing, but the response of the players to what happened as been outstanding.

“We had seven matches in October and if you’d offered me 16 points from the first six games and the possibility of making it 19 points from 21 I’d have snatched your hand off,” Ferguson stated.

“I couldn’t have asked for a lot more and if we can end the month with another win then we can look back on a fantastic October. We have had some tough fixtures and long away trips and come through it all very well.

“The players were disappointed not to beat Burton, but I was quickly into the dressing room to remind them how well they’ve done. Of course there are areas we need to improve, but you can’t win every game. Sometimes when you don’t win a game you are expected to win it feels like a defeat, but we shouldn’t be thinking like that.

“League One is very tough this season, Tomnorrow we play a Shrewsbury team with great experience in players like Charlie Daniels, Leon Clarke and Jason Cummings. They are on a bad run, but they’ve lost their last three mataches by one goal and there has been nothing in those matches.

“I haven’t done so well against Shrewsbury recently so it would be nice to put that right, but it;s not about me it’s about finishing an excellent month off in style.

“If we win tomorrow we would have the best form of anyone in League One. The table starts to take shape after 10-12 matches and we want to be in that leading pack.”

Ferguson could freshen Posh up tomorrow with Niall Mason pushing Nathan Thompson for the right-back spot.

Striker Jonson Clarke-Harris is expected to start as he chases a goal in four successive matches.
